If you are worried about your friend, it may not be to do with alcohol and drugs and could be about other things like problems in the family or stress with school work. It can be hard to find a way to start a conversation about what might be upsetting your friend, but you are in a good postion to help and give them someone to talk to.

Not all young people use drugs or alcohol, but some of your friends might run into problems and there are plenty of ways to help which could include:

  • Giving them the time and space to tell you what's up

  • Building their confidence to approach someone or their parents to get some help

  • Knowing what drugs and alcohol do, the risks and possible harms

  • Speaking to Childline or Talk to Frank who can give you extra advice or ideas about helping your friend
