It's a fact that your parents were teenagers too. What a boring old line, you think, you've heard that a thousand times. Even so, it's true.


They might have lived in a different time, maybe they had less freedom, but they still went through adolescence. Some parents think that means they understand everything that's happening to you - an idea that most young people reject. 


It may feel as though they use the fact that they went through it to downplay what you're going through. But if they really remembered and understood, they'd take you a lot more seriously, right? 


Get them to talk about what they did as teenagers. What about the first time they smoked, or drank?
