Energy Drinks

-
Energy drinks are soft drinks which people take as a stimulant to stop them from feeling tired.
-
They often contain lots of sugars and caffeine.
-
The main energy drinks in the UK are: Red Bull, Monster, Rockstarr, Relentless and Kick.
-
While energy drinks can help you keep alert and focused in moderation, too many energy drinks can make you feel unwell due to the caffeine.
-
Caffeine is very addictive, you may therefore have withdrawal symptoms when you stop drinking energy drinks, the effects of this include: headaches, fatigue, anxiety, irritability, depression and difficulty concentrating.
-
Other effects of drinking energy drinks regularly can be: feeling sick, insomnia (can't sleep) and high blood pressure.
-
It is recommended that under the age of 18 you shouldn't have more than 100mg of caffeine a day.
You should only drink drink up to 100mg of caffeine a day!
This is equivalent to about:
-
1.3 Shots of espresso
-
Less than 300ml (1 and 1/4 cans) of Red Bull
-
Half of one 5 Hour Energy Shot
-
283ml of Monster Energy Drink (less than half a can)
-
118ml of a Starbucks Venti brewed coffee (1/5 of large cup of coffee)
-
3 cans of Coke
Otherwise there is some evidence that the effects of caffeine could have long-term impacts on your health.

But what does 100mg of caffeine actually mean?
